NIL question - why can’t someone (don’t think the school can be involved) get one of our scholarship guys an NIL deal to go off scholarship but still be in the same position financially. Reef gets a $50k NIL deal from Big Fred’s, gives up his schollie and we sign someone else? Just curious.

What would be in it for the player? Why would he give up his scholarship for an NIL deal instead of just looking for one on top of not having to pay for school?

Nothing. He’s indifferent but the school has one more scholarship to improve the team. I guess this question is too complex for you geniuses. There will be no schools that use NIl to expand their rosters with additional NIl $$’s instead of scholarships. Got it.

It’s not that it’s complex - you’re just asking an 18-22 year old kid to give up $50k. Doesn’t really make sense in the grand scheme of things, especially if that kid could go elsewhere and get that $50k AND a scholarship.

Interesting. So Doug didn’t give up his scholarship so we could sign another player?

You mean the coach’s son who was also an All-American, and who played basketball before NIL and the current transfer market existed? Yeah, so did Groselle and Kreklow, but they’re the exception and not the rule. You also can’t write an NIL deal as an incentive for a player to stay at a school, so I’m pretty sure paying a player just to give up their scholarship and stay at that school would be off the table. Don’t you think a school like Kentucky would be fielding an entire team full of McDonald’s All Americans if they could just set up NIL deals for guys once they fill up their scholarship limit? It’s just not a practical idea.
