This is confusing to me. He would be a Kaluma replacement.. Comparing the shooting numbers I would consider Nelson slightly better, but if you consider the step up in competition to the BE they are probably comparable.

Kaluma - .423 FG / .311 3PT / .736 FT
Nelson - .521 FG / .269 3 PT / .720 FT

Assist to turnover ratio is also not the greatest way to measure their ability to perform as PFs, but again they are comparable. Should probably also consider Nelson was the focal point of their offense and likely drew other teams best defenders/double teams. He also put up 12.7 shots per game to Kalumas 9.3 - meaning he likely had the ball in his hands significantly more and had more opportunities to turn the ball over. Still have to consider the step up in competition again, so likely similar again.

Kaluma - 1.6 assist / 2.1 TO = 0.76 ratio
Nelson - 2.1 assist / 2.6 TO = 0.80 ratio

One of the more important stats IMO for their position would be rebounds. This is something that would likely translate immediately (Baylor went from 7.8 RPG in the Summit to 8.3 RPG in the BE). I think Nelson has the significant edge here.

Kaluma - 6.0 RPG / 0.6 Blocks
Nelson - 9.3 RPG / 1.7 Blocks

Kaluma may not have been a fan favorite by any means, but he is still a solid player and is in contention to be drafted for a reason. I have no idea if the coaches will pursue him or not, but I think he may be better than our current NBA draft player and significantly better at this point in his career than our other options at the 4. With Kalk and Trey back, I think we are still a top 15 team in the country, but the addition of Nelson would make us immediate national champion contenders.

Even with the poor 3 PT shooting this past year, he was still a top 5 player in the Summit (and maybe the best given that every team was likely throwing everyone at him defensively).

Differences between him and Kaluma are around how well they finish in 2 PT range last year. Obviously, nobody like Kalkbrenner or Clingan patrolling the paint in the Summit league, but they did play Arkansas and he finished with 17 pts against them, including 2/2 dunks, 3/4 at the rim, 1/3 mid range, 4/7 2 PT, 1/2 3 PT and 6/8 FT's, didn't do as well against Kansas, but at least there were 2 Power conf. programs to gauage

some stats:
dunks 30/33
Rim 116/167
Other 2 PT 54/116
3 PT: 25/92

Art:
Dunks 22/25
at the rim: 84/142
other 2 PT 21/71
3 PT: 41/132

Would definitely boost our chances, but I'm not getting my hopes up too much given his NBA option.

I have watched Nelson play since AAU and multiple times at NDSU. I don't see the fit. He is not a physical player and does struggle with lateral movement. He is listed at 6 11, but doesn't play that big. I thought Wisconsin would be a good place for him, as they can protect him in the pack line on D and the offense is not geared toward spreading the floor.

The only way this makes sense to me is if we are losing 2 players to the draft.

Other thoughts?

Or losing one and bumping someone else (Green?) .. don't know how I would feel about that development. Nelson looks like a mixed bag that doesn't address a roster need

I think Knox would be the top candidate for this. He only had one other scholarship offer (SFU), I could see Greg giving him a scholly but making it contingent upon what else is happening in the portal. I also would not be surprised if we are preparing to lose 2 of the 3 guys in the draft. If this were the case, due to the nature of Nelson's game that person appears to be Kalk. No idea at all though

Wouldn't Nelson replace Art at the PF position? I would think Knox is the one who would get bumped if we got Nelson.

‘Bumped’ is semantics.

More like ‘Moved from scholarship to walk-on while receiving the equivalent NIL money of a scholarship player PLUS enough additional to cover the scholarship loss’.
