In this current environment I'm not sure why you recruit high school kids anymore. Get them after their freshmen year in college that way they have a year of college you can review and if they transfer again they have to sit out a year...

UConn's core was built through high school recruiting (Sanogo, Hawkins, Jackson, Karaban, Clingan), and then Hurley filled in the gaps with a few transfers (Newton, Calcaterra, Alleyne, Diarra).

Creighton just made an Elite 8 run with a recruited core plus a couple of transfers to round out the rotation.

Coaches aren't doing their jobs if they aren't taking advantage of every avenue available to add talent and build winning teams.

The recruiting environment is not the same from when it was 2 years ago and it probably won't be the same 2 years from now...I don't disagree with your premise but it seems like the current environment would dictate putting more of your resources into the transfer portal vs. high school recruiting.

I understand that thought process, but I think the core of your team needs to start from HS recruiting.

We just had 2 years of relative stability with getting a core and filling in around the edges.

Culture matters such that teams that don’t develop those bonds wilt when the tough times come.

I would expect teams to be built somewhere between 40 - 60% either way between portal and high school, but time will tell.
