God forbid a kid wants to go make a living or get more playing time or get out of a situation where a cosh probably lied to him to get him to go there or get out of a situation where his coach bolted because they don't have to sit out a year when they love schools.

No issue with a kid making a living, BUT the schools are not responsible for aiding them in that by providing the ability for them to do a 1 and done that essentially makes a joke of the student athlete image.

Nice Straw man, but I'll play along -- So should colleges be obliged to facilitate any kid's desire for any career regardless of alignment with their academic mission?

The D-league exists as a place where kids can go play Basketball if their desire is to be a professional basketball player. Additionally, European and international teams sign kids all the time. Why should colleges act as if their academic principles should be subjugated to a kid's desire to play professional ball? There are plenty of other ways for them to pursue that career without making a joke of the concept of "student athletes"

- As for the 5-8 rule, there is plenty of room there for kids to transfer and it provides some limitations on coaches like Cal and to limit oversigning.

- Cracking down on the senior transfer rule makes sense because the rule doesn't even do what it purports to accomplish.

Pretty dramatic there, Jaysker.

I suspect it's because our actual location in the college basketball continuum does not mesh with where a lot of people on here assumed it would be.

If I had to guess I would say it's due to us glossing over an unattractive quality or two that exists at CU (like no postseason successes in history) while discounting things that other programs have as positives that we don't, such as location or conference affiliation.

All the bickering aside, its sad to see us miss out on another player we really could have used. It's becoming apparent that the conference move did not have as many immediate recruiting benefits as was previously thought. Whatever it is - appeal of location, program tradition, our reputation as a private mid major in the midwest - there is something that's keeping all of these recruits from choosing CU. Is this what its like to be Northwestern?

This staff’s not going to beat out Kentucky for any recruits, and it would have to be a pretty incredible staff at CU to ever beat those guys for someone. I think the UK “offer” skepticism is warranted, but whatever truly happens with Mulder’s offers, CU looks to have about a 1% chance of landing him at this point.

Mac and co. must get better at their analysis of recruiting battles. Trent and several other guys over the past several months were winnable, but the staff chose to focus on battles against blueblood programs (e.g. Michigan State) or programs closer to the recruit’s home (Virginia Tech). Maybe this will all work out in the end, and the Trents, Milons, Schwartzes, etc. of the world would not have performed at a much higher Big East level than a lot of the guys we had on our 4-14 team. Regardless, the “something that's keeping all of these recruits from choosing CU” has recently been elite programs or homestate/hometown schools. We absolutely seem to have a better chance with recruits than when we in the MVC, but the staff’s risks have yet to yield much benefit. That said, the program is still not a big name program. There is no football to help boost the brand. CU's still located in CU. Etc. The coaches never suggested that it would be an easy transition, I just hoped that our early and important recruiting battles would be against say TCU (who we probably could have beaten for Trent), Minnesota, Colorado and other low or mid-tier high majors.

FWIW, Jerry Meyer changed his Mulder pick to Kentucky and had an article that stated a UK offer for Mulder was "imminent". Uphill sledding from here on out.

I think we should start to put some pressure on these type of recruits. Give them an offer and ask for their commitment by a certain date or we pull the offer.

If this kid hasn't committed already, he probably isn't going to. So if we go in and tell him to commit or we're out, we might lose out on him, but it probably won't matter. It will show that we mean business and we aren't gonna sit and wait while he shops around and uses us as a back up plan. That might translate into a commitment.

In a sense...yes. now CU has made tournaments and won a game here and there compared to NW never having made a tourney. But in terms of the tourney putting a program on the map they are probably in the same boat. 1 win and done doesn't really register.

Look at gonzaga. They made a couple runs years ago and turned it into a freaking brand. One that gets them recruits a WCC program should never get and seeds a WCC program should never get (at least they backed it up this year).

CU needs to make a couple deeps runs to really make a name for themselves. Finishing last in the big East while not having "household name" status isn't going to float a lot of 17 year old boats.

The next two years are crucial for CU. Cannot have another 2014/2015 and sometime soon they need to grab the nation's attention with a serious run in the dance.

Many here have gone on record irt the 1st two years or the 1st five years in the conference as their "crucial" timeframe. Would love to hear your overall point of view, as compared to what others have offered. Furthermore, you don't sound as though panic or ledge dwelling has set in yet, like a few here recently. Please be kind and expound on your thoughts. I am not looking to debate nor argue, but would love to hear a well thought out point of view. Thanks.

I guess I wasn't real clear. I don't mean that CU needs to make that run I talked about within the next 2 years. What I mean is I think CU cannot afford to back up this past season with 2 more like it.

Personally I don't think they will. But IF they did I could see them getting stuck at the bottom of the conference for an extended period of time. Once that happens it can be tough to get out it. Obviously it's still hard for CU to snag these recruits. That would make it so much more difficult...then a revolving door of coaches, etc.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not predicting doomsday. And I really do think they can be xavier-ish next year. But another run of tough luck, an injury or two and look out.

CU doesn't have the name recognition, "brand", whatever that Marquette has. Not a real recruiting junkie but from what I read on here it doesn't sound like wallowing at the bottom of the big East for a year has hurt their recruiting. The Jays can't afford to run that risk.
